In 2011, Manal al-Sharif was imprisoned for “driving while female” in Saudi Arabia. Now she’s inspiring other women to take control of the wheel – and their lives
It was 2am when religious police knocked on Manal al-Sharif’s door and took her to jail. Her crime? She had driven a car through the streets of Khobar on the east coast of Saudi Arabia in defiance of local customs. Sharif, the founder of the Women2Drive campaign, was arrested a day after she posted an eight-minute video of her protest drive on YouTube.
“I couldn’t understand why I was being interrogated,” says Sharif, now 38. “There are no laws forbidding women to drive, only customs.”
