The Mental Heroes
Marie Claire Malaysia|October 2019
More often than not, we forget that counsellors and therapists are also human and experience human emotions just like the rest of us. How do they protect themselves from absorbing other people’s negative energy and still remain mentally strong and aloof? Jerrica Leong speaks to two professionals to find out how

The Mental Heroes

Psychology is a scientific study of mind and behavior. It is an understanding of how the human mind works and why the particular mind reacts in that way both consciously and unconsciously. In our high-speed world, anxiety and depression has fast become an epidemic that saw suicide cases rising in alarming numbers. There are even “suicide” hotspots like the Aokigahara, or otherwise known as Suicide Forest in Japan and the Prince Edward Viaduct in Canada. The need for psychology counselors is at a record high and we’re thankful to those who have dedicated their lives to continue their studies in psychology especially those who have dedicated their psychological expertise on helping those who can’t control their dark thoughts.

We are always advised to avoid negative energies or even situations as it is believed that negativity is the biggest cause of poor mental health. But for a counselor, their work exposes themselves to the negative energies of their patients daily to help them manage their mental health issues that range from depression to post-traumatic disorder and more. The task of not allowing the negative energy affects them is more daunting than the average businesswoman, so how do they manage to stay strong mentally? Marie Claire sits down with 2 well-known psychology therapists, counselor and psychiatrists to find out how do they maintain a healthy mindset after helping others to off-load their negativity.
