We’ve just been through a gruelling summer full of suited corporate events, wedding receptions and everyday commutes. And, I’m convinced about one thing. International fashion trends are certainly not made for the Indian summer. So, how does one stay on trend, look cool and keep cool, too? Just shrug it off, we say.

The shrug has shaken off the hipster, preppy, retro attributes of its older cousin—the cardigan—and re-invented itself as a go-to piece for both winter and summer wardrobes. It transcends not only the seasons, but also the boundaries of both smart and casual. This multi-purpose ethos means the shrug can be worn with a shirt and tie, but look just as stylish worn with either a smart polo or a plain T-shirt on a warm summer’s eve. Worn the right way, it can even make you look like an Italian style legend. Elegant. Masculine. Timeless. And, all the other adjectives you want people to use when they describe you.

The versatility of the shrug plays to its advantage. We’ve seen the shrug done in an array of fabrics. From the easy breezy comfy jersey knit (or T-shirt fabric) to the heavier (and more formal) knits that are sophisticated and great for a more formal or wintry wardrobe.

There’s something about the shrug that feels fresh and stylish, especially when it’s styled with an elegant shirt. It’s an important accessory when it comes to layering.
