“There is a lot to love about Bombay!” says Peter Dundas, as we settle in for a coffee at the St. Regis in Mumbai. “I’ve been dressing Indian women for most of my career and now, in a way, we are presenting the brand officially to you, to India, so that’s exciting.”
Dundas is in town with his partner in life and work, Evangelo Bousis. A few months after this interview, his date for the Met Gala is Natasha Poonawalla, a long-time friend, stunning in an ice-blue, embellished high-low dress that perfectly encapsulated Dundas’s signature glamour.
In an exclusive conversation, Dundas, who spent years leading the way at Emilio Pucci and Roberto Cavalli, and Bousis, popularly known as EV, share their plans to disrupt and reinvent the fashion business.
The first question I’m sure you get often is about moving away from legacy brands to creating your own... Peter Dundas:
Well… The biggest change was actually doing it and going into business with Evangelo as well, which has been fantastic. As far as the business and design go, it really has been falling into the strategy of connecting directly with our customers, friends and muses. That has guided the creative direction of the brand. Maybe to a fault sometimes, I have always designed or made a collection with a type of woman in mind. And that worked when we started our own brand because the DNA was so clear.
How are you changing up the fashion game then? Evangelo
Bousis: We’ve always stayed true to who we are as well. We kind of let it evolve with where our life is at that point. Obviously, we started with women because it felt right. That is the beauty of having your own company. We can adjust our plans. It’s like how we started our pop-up flagship. We started in LA, then Mykonos with two weeks’ notice. Then New York and Texas came up and then customer demand lead us back to New York. We love this flexibility.
