We were down to the last day of deer gun season and a buck tag was still weighing heavy on my mind if not in my pocket. Rain was in the forecast but no way was I giving up on that last chance for the season.
"I don't want to sit and soak on stand all day," I said to my hunting buddy, Dale. "Do you know any thick cover where bucks and does might be locked down for the day? I don't mind going into a bedding area on the last day of the season."
Dale's eyes narrowed and a wicked grin spread across his face. "I know just the place, a nasty spruce swamp. Nobody ever goes in there-except for the deer."
"I'm in," I grinned back. "What's your plan?"
We parked near the place Dale had in mind, pulled our hunting clothes from plastic tubs layered with cedar boughs and acorns then put them on. We sprayed down with Scent Killer then smeared buck lure on our boots.
Dale loaded his Remington 870 with a 12-gauge slug in the chamber followed by two rounds of buckshot. I loaded three buckshot rounds in my Browning BPS. I figured any shot I got would be 30 yards or less through thick brush and limbs.
"So, here's the plan," Dale whispered before pulling down his camo face mask.
"You take your grunt call and I'll bring my doe-in-heat bleat can. We'll space out twenty yards abreast of each other. I'll pick my way slowly ahead around 30 yards, stop, and make with the bleat call. That's your signal to move slowly past me about 30 yards. Move so slowly a snail could pass you. When you stop, huff a grunt on the call. Then stay in position watching as I slowly creep past you."
