With passenger movements stopping sharply, the aviation world crash landed. Airlines shut down or trimmed operations, airports were empty and duty free came to a standstill. Ambrosia takes a look at the losses and how the aviation industry plans to bounce back now that airlines have started operating flights to select destinations.
Global Duty Free Retailing Takes A Pit Stop

The current pandemic has had a devastating effect on travel across the globe and as the world’s transport routes have shut down, duty free sales have declined precipitously. The Duty Free Council, and its members, are leading requests for specific support measures for the duty free and travel retail industry.

We are actively engaging with global, regional, and national bodies to ensure the important contribution our industry makes to the aviation, maritime and broader travel and tourism industries is fully appreciated. Industry sales exceed US$ 60 bn annually.

Revenues from Duty Free & Travel Retail sales are the number one source of non-aeronautical revenues earned by airports world-wide and on average account for over 40% of such revenue. Our industry supports an estimated 650.000 jobs and contributes US$35 bn. to global GDP.

Our channel is distinct from sales channels in domestic markets, which are often the beneficiaries of support initiatives either not extended to, or inappropriate for the specific needs of our industry. Additionally, the impact on and recovery phase of our industry is expected to be longer and deeper than the domestic retail channels.
