Doing the same thing day in, day out can get old fast. The fix? Adding a new twist to make even the most humdrum experiences feel more interesting.
According to a series of experiments carried out by Ohio State University and the University of Chicago, doing the same activities in unusual ways can help us enjoy them as if we’re experiencing them for the first time. The experiments involved participants doing everyday things in novel ways – eating popcorn using chopsticks, for example, or drinking water out of a martini glass. It may sound silly, but those who tried a new approach found they enjoyed the task more than those who carried out the activities the regular way.
