We all have times in our life when we feel really low. It could be due to stress at school or work, family problems, financial problems, the loss of a loved one, maybe even the weather. We may feel sad, hopeless, anxious, stressed, and it may last for days or even weeks.
While anyone can suffer bouts of sadness, women seem to be more prone to depression than men. The cause of depression is not fully understood, but is likely to be a combination of genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors.
While clinical depression is a serious mental health disorder that requires medications and counselling, milder, temporary episodes of sadness can be tackled or prevented in practical ways.
1 Know what sets it off
Try to analyse your situation and find out what brings on the melancholy or stress. For some people, it’s because they didn’t eat well. For others, it could be due to hanging around with toxic people. It could even be as simple as not getting sufficient sleep for a prolonged period. Once you figure it out, do your best to avoid or counter those situations. When you know the problem, you can also better decide if you need help, whether from a medical professional or family member.
