After overcoming breast cancer twice by the age of 35, the vibrant, relentless and energetic, Dr Aiesha Asmadi takes no time for granted. AS A SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALIST IN TRAINING, WHAT ARE THE COMMON SPORTS INJURIES YOU SEE?
The common sports injuries I see are overuse injuries and acute trauma (in people who were not properly trained or conditioned for the intense activities they went for). These usually happen among “weekend warriors”, those who overexert themselves or those who only do intense sports during the weekends.

WE HEARD THAT YOU SURVIVED BREAST CANCER. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT WHAT IT WAS BEING SO YOUNG?
In my second year of medical training, I accidentally discovered a lump in my breast. As a medical student, part of our training was to do 5-minute clinical examinations performed on patients in front of an examiner. I performed a breast examination on myself for practice, and that’s when I found a lump. I went through surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy for treatment, and it took me one year to recover. Everything changed after I went through breast cancer. I felt like I lost my identity and I had to rebuild myself again as a person.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS AND BODYBUILDING?
I first got introduced to weight training when I was undergoing rehabilitation after breast cancer treatment. My fitness levels dropped, and I felt very weak. I almost collapsed when I attempted to jog on my own.
