WHAT I’VE LEARNT ABOUT FATHERHOOD
My dad Tony worked a lot. He owned shoe shops and I would work with him during the summer holidays. He instilled honesty, working hard. You would never get showered with praise. That was the way he was brought up. You sort of had to prove yourself by working hard. Everything had to be done properly. It was a pain in the arse. He was a real stickler. That’s something that’s rubbed off on me. I don’t do stuff unless I do it well.
He was great at cooking. That’s where I got it from. Wednesday and Sunday were his days. Women did the cooking back then. But he took great pride in it. He put a lot of work into it, planned it out. Everything was well done. That’s the way he ate it. He did onion rings and things like that that were pretty spot on. Anything he did, he took pride in. That’s one thing you could say about my old man: he didn’t do anything half-arsed.
