Is there such a thing as thin-shaming? Yes there is, but Ashley Azevedo overcame the odds and the ridicule and learned how to love herself!
We’ve all heard of fat-shaming, but there is another side of the coin. “Growing up I was always the ‘skinny girl,’ and it was a constant struggle to keep on enough weight just to be considered ‘normal,’” Ashley Azevedo says. “People would question if I ever ate, make anorexic jokes, and feel the need to voice their opinion on how my body looked and what I should do to change it. I became very self-conscious and began looking for ways to put on weight.”
Iron Appeal
When she was 16, Azevedo got a gym membership and began lifting weights and knew instantly that this was her path. “I was finally able to sculpt my body how I wanted and gained more than 15 pounds in only a few years,” she says. Not only did she improve her physical health and well-being, Azevedo also began to appreciate her body for what it could do for the first time in her life.

THE POWER CLEAN (Discover this dirty little secret for better functional fitness.)
OLYMPIC LIFTS ARE A VALUABLE TOOL FOR IMPROVING STRENGTH and athletic performance — and as a side bonus, they also help develop crazy-good muscle shape, size, and definition. In fact, one could argue that the power-clean portion of the clean-and-jerk is the best exercise ever devised. “The clean is a functional movement used [routinely] in everyday activities,” says Aaron Viscounte, CSCS, head coach and manager at Summer’s Fitness Inc. in North Canton, Ohio. “We use aspects of the clean to pick up a box and put it on a shelf, move furniture or even go grocery shopping.” During a power clean, the barbell travels from the floor to the “racked” position at shoulder level and back down again. We tapped some elite trainers for their step-by-step expert advice on making the most of every rep.
