What can coax you to sleep, gently wake you up and tell you when something might not be right at night? It’s your heart rate. And while it’s not the only factor to consider when analysing sleep, looking at heart rate data can help you “gauge a basic understanding of how well you slept at night”, says Dr Chelsie Rohrscheib, sleep expert, neuroscientist and member of the Sleep Cycle Institute.
Got your sleep stats from your tracker out? Great. So, what exactly are you looking for? Generally speaking, a normal heart rate pattern during a good night’s sleep looks like a stick-figure drawing of you catching up on your book-club read on the couch, with your legs propped up, pencilled by your four year-old niece.
