In hospital, new moms are surrounded by sisters and nurses who help with bathing, latching and nappies.
But after about two days, most healthy newborns go home, and for the first time, you and your partner have to navigate these uncharted waters alone! Nothing can ever completely prepare you, but eventually, you’ll get settled with your new roles and routine.
BE PREPARED
Make sure you get all the newborn essentials ready during your third trimester. Often midwives, hospitals and baby stores have lists of what you’ll need. These include cotton wool and a baby bath of some sort, says Inga Sebata, mom of 5-month-old Qhawelethu. Be practical, and think of what will work best in your home and family.
A WORD ON NUTRITION
“Whether you breastfeed or formula feed, all mothers need to eat a healthy and balanced diet,” says nutritionist Desi Horsman. Eat small, regular nutritious meals and drink lots of water (a glass with every feed to prevent dehydration and provide adequate supply).
“The problem with skipping meals is that you will be low on energy and more likely to suffer from postnatal depression. It would be very beneficial to plan ahead before the birth and stock the freezer with ready-made nutritious meals that are easy to heat up with little preparation.”
