Having worked as a fashion textile designer and later as a colour and trend forecaster, design and creativity have always been important influences for Helen Bakunowicz.
For the last two years, Helen has transferred her skills from the world of design consultancy to artisan bakery, and has been busy creating her own company, The Bakemonger. Her inspirational ‘edible tapestries’ and ‘cakescapes’ are mini works of art, blurring the boundaries between food and fashion. ‘I graduated from Brighton in 2001 with a degree in Fashion Textiles Design and spent time designing in Lake Como and New York before settling back in London,’ says Helen. ‘I moved into trend forecasting and consulted international brands across fashion, footwear and interiors. Colour, detail and texture have influenced my thinking on everything.
‘Subconsciously, food references began to feature regularly on my trend moodboards and I was increasingly inspired by the creators of awe-inspiring food experiences, such as Bompas & Parr,’ says Helen. What began as a hobby – baking for friends and family, quickly took over and Helen felt a desire to merge it with her trend work.
