The inherent characteristics of an Indian society to portray extravagance as a sign of opulence was thus gradually withdrawn as the masses grew in acceptance of the new design language. But yet again, a complete detachment from the vernacular customs of architecture wasn’t entirely acceptable for the creators and clients alike. This resulted in a fusion of the contemporary and traditional palette, often evident in the form of an interplay in materials and textures. This residence in Vadodara is one such project that showcases an innovative blend of both worlds.
The playful use of colours in the interior spaces.
This juxtapose of philosophies is plainly evident as you approach the residence. An earthy brown clay tiled façade imposes itself as a design element amongst a mass of white frames and glazed planes. Manoj Patel Design Studio, the team entrusted with the design of this abode, is synonymous to being quirky designers that bring out trailblazing ideas by tweaking some of the most elementary techniques of construction. The detail in the clay tile façade design used here is both aesthetically appealing and functionally coherent. Clay roofing tiles were seen as a fundamental roofing material across a major portion of the traditional Indian architecture scenario. It presented itself as one of the most efficient solution for tropical climates owing to its cost effectiveness and impeccable thermal properties. In this project, the double V shaped clay tiles were laid in a specially designed pattern such that it shields the residence from the east sun as well as presenting an eclectic dynamism on the visual front. Alternating rows of tiles were placed slightly tilted to infuse a play of shadows onto the undulating surface texture. This novel amalgamation of design and material ensures that the residence undoubtedly stands out from its neighboring structures.
