The beauty of formal gardens lies in the ordered structure and pleasing arrangement of geometric shapes

A Classic Case

When you think of formal gardens, you immediately assume that they must be large. But, elements of this style can be extremely effective in small gardens as well, helping to establish depth and the illusion of space. You can also adapt some of these ideas for other types of gardens to create a pleasing sense of calm and order.

PERFECT LEVELS

What is essential for a formal garden is a level area – it doesn’t work on a slope. If your garden is on an incline then terracing is necessary, but the advantage is that by building terraces, you’re already establishing different ‘rooms’, an important characteristic.

GARDEN ROOMS

By dividing your garden into sections you’re able to achieve a sense of mystery and, as you can’t see the whole garden at a glance, this invites you to explore. Dividing a large garden into ‘rooms’, also has the advantage of making it more manageable. You can use hedging, fencing, trellis and walls as screens, and archways and pergolas to frame the entrance to each section. Link the different ‘rooms’ with paths and steps, keeping to the same type of material such as brick or pavers for continuity.

HEDGING

Hedging can be used to emphasise a geometric layout, outline beds and enclose different sections. Low hedges are also useful in a formal rose garden as they hide the bare ‘legs’ of rose bushes. Clip them regularly to keep them looking good and encourage new growth. A good tip is to trim them so that the bottom is slightly wider than the top to ensure the sun reaches all the leaves.
