There’s no more scenic food garden than the magnificent Werf Food Garden at Boschendal.
Apart from wine tastings in an elegant Cape Dutch-style manor house, there are many other reasons to visit the Boschendal Estate near Franschhoek in the Western Cape. On this historical farm, one of the oldest in South Africa (founded in 1685), you can stand under the cool crowns of an impressive collection of mature trees, go on romantic picnics on widespread lawns, dine in top restaurants, walk through serene gardens, including a priceless collection of the first roses ever grown in the Cape, stay over for the night, and enjoy mountain bike and nature trails, amongst the many activities on offer.
But there is one more reason for gardeners, as well as wine and food lovers, to visit Boschendal – the expertly designed Werf Food Garden bordering the Werf Restaurant. The reason for this large food garden of nearly five acres is to provide a variety of fresh, organically grown produce for two restaurants, a deli, and two picnic venues. The estate also supplies its own meat by producing Angus beef, mutton and pork, and the free range chickens provide eggs every day.
