Potentially burning more calories than cycling, running, or swimming, dance is one of the best ways to combine having fun with getting fit, according to research at Brighton University. It will work your heart, boost your mood, and strengthen your muscles and bones.
‘Whatever your age – and whether you’re a complete novice or an advanced exerciser – you can find a dance class to suit you,’ says Sammy Margo of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. ‘In fact, because dancing is such an innate and natural activity (just think of the way little children move their bodies), you’ll even find a class you can do from your chair!’ But with so many options to choose from, where should you start?
Best for: beginners
BARRE
Taking inspiration from the basic kind of ballet moves you may have learned as a child, Barre is a bit like Pilates done standing, says Sammy. ‘It’s great for strengthening your limbs and improving your core stability. Ballet squats, leg raises, and lunges are mostly done with the support of a ballet bar, but you can also use the back of a chair. It is a relatively gentle workout, but don’t push yourself too hard – you could hurt your lower back.’ Find live and virtual classes at barreconcept.co.uk
