Don't panic, but be cautious

The current energy crisis unfolding in the UK is an example of slow-motion market action. Will it resolve itself?
Simon Brown
Don't panic, but be cautious

Often in markets events happen suddenly, such as the global market collapse last year in February as the world started to fully understand the impact of what was then just called the coronavirus. Other times events happen quickly but the signs were there to see; and then at times they seem to happen in slow motion. It’s this slow-motion market action I want to focus on in this issue and in particular the current energy crisis unfolding in the UK.

There are a lot of moving parts to the story but at the heart of it is the price of natural gas in the UK and Europe which has skyrocketed. Depending on the contract and quality, the increase over the past three to four months has been between 50% and 500%.
