You can fake it through the fall with these hardy plants.

A Garden Reborn

After A couple months of blistering heat, Baltimore’s gardens often look pretty much spent by the time October rolls around. But they don’t need to—you can import some new life into the picture with a trip to the local garden center. What are you looking for? Things that will add a blast of color but that also will be tolerant of the nippy nights to come. Here are a few suggestions:

ENCORE AZALEA

Available in white or pink, this is a hybridized version of the original spring-blooming azalea and holds its blossoms longer in cooler temperatures. Plant in full sun or part shade in wellworked, enriched garden soil. As blooms begin to wilt, prune azaleas lightly to propagate new growth and flowering during the coming spring.
