IN JANUARY, as COVID-19 started its spread around the world, a team of Johns Hopkins University engineers began tracking local and global data to document the novel coronavirus. Their online dashboard now gets upwards of 4.5 billion hits a day from researchers, public health officials, and the general public. In early May, we spoke with project lead Lauren Gardner, infectious disease specialist and co-director of the school’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering, about the viral moment.
