Celtic’s Belgian tales on and off the pitch
CELTIC Football Club is a name known throughout the football world, while in just about any country you care to mention, you’re guaranteed to find Celtic supporters proudly wearing the green and white Hoops. And as well as having universal appeal, the Celtic first-team squad has a global look to it, with players from 13 countries playing their part in the historic success the club has enjoyed in recent seasons. Over the course of this season we’ll be taking a closer look at these countries and their current Celtic links, as well as other nations who have played their part in our unique story.
This week it’s Belgium...
AND IF YOU KNOW THE HISTORY
It was in season 1984/85 that Celtic first travelled to Belgium when they visited the Flemish region for a Cup-Winners’ Cup tie against KAA Ghent. The first leg tie took place on September 19, 1984, and Celtic were just nine minutes away from a 0-0 draw when Hubert Cordiez scored a late winner for the home side. The Hoops, however, always looked a better side than Ghent and cruised through the second leg with a 3-0 win in Glasgow. Frank McGarvey grabbed goals in either half and Paul McStay added some gloss to the scoreline late on with a third.
