For as long as I can remember, most of my vacations have been in Goa. During school days, it would be after the final examinations, tagging along with my parents; during my teenage years it would be with friends; after marriage it was with wife and children; and now, post-retirement, it is once again with like-minded friends. However, the one unfortunate change has been that Goa is not the same anymore. Especially the beaches of Baga, Colva and Calangute have become prone to what may be termed a case of tourist epidemic. It’s fine if tourists come to enjoy the sun, sand and the sea but what is not so fine are the hordes of unruly young people who spoil the fun with their drunk and irritating behavior.
Anyway, when we decided to go to Goa again this year, the plan was to skip the more popular destinations and find some remote place that would give us an opportunity to spend the mornings and evenings simply staring out to the sea, chatting and catching up, and enjoying some local seafood. Therefore, on the recommendation of a friend, we chose to drive down to South Goa and, in particular, to a place called Patnem, which is close to the Palolem beach that is much favored by the foreigners because it is out of the way and quieter. The beach here is lined with beach shacks and huts, yet there’s plenty of space for everyone.
