Slight of frame, the Naga artist making a name for himself in the art corridors of upscale London seems at ease in both these contrasting worlds— his work too closely reflects this duality in terms of texture and depth.
‘I work across a range of topics and media including installations and time based art,’ says Temsuyanger Longkumer. He belongs to a new generation of artists who are comfortable in different spaces, and in fact use it to their advantage, as is evident in Temsuyanger’s work which is a complex coming together of various socio-cultural influences. Born and brought up in Nagaland, Temsuyanger spent his formative years in the State, and most of his work reflects his deep love of his native land, its customs, dances, music, and most of all, its people. ‘A key theme I explore is the decline of indigenous cultures in the face of constant technological and societal change and how to preserve traditional practices with the help of art and technology’ reflects Temsu, as he is fondly known amongst friends.

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance.The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
