With the Option of Snapchat Filters, Polaroid Films, Underwater Cameras and Portable Photo Printers, It’s Impossible to Imagine a Life Without Pictures in This Tech-obsessed World We Live in. Reuben, 31, and Fann, 28, will be celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary this coming September, but that’s not all that’s turning one year older this year. ‘My First Selfie’, a self-initiated project they’ve been funding since 2015 is in the works of continuing its third chapter. This photo series project was founded when the couple stumbled upon the most beautiful sunset in Cambodia during their holiday back in 2014. Reuben recalls how excited the children from the rural villages of Siem Reap were when they saw their own faces through his LCD screen. After that trip, he learnt that none of these villagers has ever owned a picture of themselves and that’s when he got the idea to kick-start this project.

While Reuben and Fann are both full-time web designers, their passion in photography and dream of helping the community in the village led to a successful Kickstarter campaign that allowed them to donate 600 framed portraits. “Seeing how the kids hugged their framed photos like a teddy bear after taking a deep long look at them is an experience I’ll never forget,” says Reuben. Last year, with an increase in donations, the couple returned to the same village they first visited back in 2014 and provided them with more photographs, 300 sets of soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, over 200 water filters, two wheelchairs and a bicycle. They’ve also managed to build six wells in areas that were lacking fresh water. What started out as a small project to provide free portrait frames to the people from poverty-stricken villages has since led to something bigger.
