The brand Ezzati Amira is at the forefront of the ‘new modern woman’ – embodying the right cut, pattern and androgynous silhouette. The designer talks military uniforms and Anita Sarawak with Liyana Zamzuri.
The fitting model, dressed in a structured and very architectural shirt paired with a beautiful asymmetrical Prince of Wales chequered skirt, oozed je ne sais quoi. When this combination floated down the runway at KLFW17 last August, it was a billowy number that reflected Ezzati Amira’s taste for everything androgynous and coltishly feminine.
Here in the showroom in Bangsar’s Lorong Maarof, I’m witnessing the designer in her element. The eclectic mix of furnishings and greens filling her showroom exemplifies her wide ranging taste — nothing about the space feels as though it’s straining for effect.
FINDING HER OWN ROUTE
“...oh, maybe I should start my own brand?” And so, Ezzati Amira the brand was conceived after she spotted a gap for ready-to-wear outfits in the Malaysian market whilst job hunting. While the industry is now saturated, back then, it had very little to offer. In 2013, the design process began; she went on to do sketches, sew samples, and coordinate photo shoots. And soon, her creations were up online. Instagram was her ‘rideor-die’ back then (and still is), and when people started to take notice, demand for her garments grew. That’s when Ezzati knew she was on the right path – before striking out on her own, she worked with a local fashion brand for almost three years.
STATE OF MIND
“Bold, strong and successful independent women are the Ezzati Amira women. In their mid-twenties to mid-thirties, they know what they want: quality. My loyal customers know that they won’t get these pieces anywhere else due to our exclusivity. We don’t produce in large quantities, as our aim is to produce long-lasting products.
