Hertfordshire Year of Culture 2020 will see an array of activities, special events and experiences taking place throughout 12 themed months, looking to celebrate all things creative, share our cultural experiences and explore our wonderful heritage.
HYOC2020 is calling on local individuals and organisations involved in delivering creative, cultural and heritage activities across the county to get involved.
Why culture?
Taking part in creativity and culture has a positive impact on our health and wellbeing. An All-Party Parliamentary Group report in 2017 concluded: ‘the arts can help keep us well, aid our recovery and support longer lives, better lived.’ The report also suggests that culture can and is having a positive impact on key issues for local communities such as loneliness and social isolation.
Studies have shown that taking part in arts and culture can have a positive impact on specific health conditions such as dementia, depression and Parkinson’s disease; as well as enhance creative thinking skills, making those who participate more attractive to employers. But simpler than that, being creative gives people the opportunity to express themselves, meet likeminded people, find purpose, and even reduce levels of stress and anxiety.
