It is without question that a mother’s love shapes her children. How a mother brings up her child will have a profound and long-lasting impact on his or her well-being and perception of the world. Such was the mother’s influence of St. Monica on her son who became St. Augustine of Hippo. Her life, lived in prayer and charity, shows how a mother’s love coupled with deep faith and an enduring spirit, can transform even the most stubborn of hearts.

CHRISTIAN UPBRINGING

Born in Tagaste, North Africa, Monica was a daughter of Christian parents. She lived a very pious life and had a great love for God. Her childhood was spent in church, where she would tell the Lord her troubles and desires. She wished to emulate the lives of martyrs and was fascinated with stories about saints.

PAGAN HOUSEHOLD

At the age of 22, Monica wed a man named Patricius in an arranged marriage. Patricius, a pagan from a distinguished family in Tagaste, was known for his violent temper and adulterous ways. The union produced three children that survived infancy: Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua.
