Spring is a time many of us associate with hayfever. But while it’s true many allergy-causing plants pollinate at this time of year, GP Dr Michela Sorensen says the peak time varies depending on where you live. Read on for more facts you may not know!

HAYFEVER SEASON VARIES FROM STATE TO STATE

“In south-eastern Australia it’s classically spring, starting in October to November,” Dr Sorensen explains. “In Western Australia it begins in July and in the Northern Territory and North Queensland, peak allergy season is December through to April.”

IT’S OFTEN WORSE IN THE MORNING

If you find your allergies hit hardest early in the day, Dr Sorensen says you’re not alone. “If possible, stay indoors in the morning as grass pollens mainly circulate [then],” she advises.
