MUM'S NIGHTMARE: 'MY BOY WOKE UP PARALYSED'

Belinda Moore’s Monday started just like any other, cuddling with her 4-year-old, Oliver.

She could never have predicted the traumatic journey that was to follow her son’s next words: “Mummy, I can’t sit up.”

Within hours, Oliver was screaming out in pain in a hospital bed. The following morning, he was paralysed from the shoulders down.

Tests revealed that he had Guillain-Barré syndrome, a neurological disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves.

Remarkably, thanks to intense therapy, Oliver has regained the use of his legs and, two years later, he’s doing better than ever.

“Looking back, I can’t believe what a rough time we had,” Belinda, a mum of three, tells New Idea. “He was in so much pain that I couldn’t even give him a hug. As a mum, that was terrible.”

In the days leading up to his paralysis, Oliver was tired and wobbly on his feet, but Belinda put that down to him being a youngster.
