Autumn marks the party conference season, and BASC has been working hard across all parties to promote the virtues of our sport and ensure it continues to survive and thrive
All-party backing
BASC and the Angling Trust joined forces during the party conference season this year, hosting rural receptions at the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat conferences in September and October.
One of our strategic objectives is to get all-party backing for shooting, and that is why we work with all political parties to represent shooting’s interests.
The conferences are not only a valuable opportunity to showcase the positives that shooting has to offer society, but also to rise to the challenge of criticism of our sport.
For example, at the Labour party conference the Shadow Environment Secretary, Sue Hayman, MP for Workington in Cumbria, made the point that Labour wants to work closely with BASC, but that they want to see standards improving and more work on sustainability, in order to promote good practice and clamp down on issues such as the illegal shooting of raptors.
Our response was that shooting must be sustainable to survive, and that BASC and most shooters on the ground are squarely focused on sustainable shooting.
