The Redskins defensive back group has been a mostly-pleasant surprise.
The unit had some major question marks heading into the season and so far, so good. The questions were both on and off the field and almost every test has been passed, if not mastered.
In addition to a new defensive coordinator (Greg Manusky) and defensive line coach (Jim Tomsula), Washington needed a new secondary coach.
The Redskins fired Perry Fewell after two years on the job after some players regressed last year, like Bashaud Breeland and Quinton Dunbar, and Fewell didn't connect with some in his group. Josh Norman was fine, but dropped some potential game-changing interceptions throughout the season and was the most penalized player in the NFL. Kendall Fuller struggled mightily in his rookie year and the Redskins lacked depth to overcome their faults.
Washington’s safety group was once again a leaky dam. From DeAngelo Hall’s torn ACL in week three to Duke Ihenacho and everything in between, the road was anything but a yellow brick one.
The Redskins hired former NFL veteran corner back, Torrian Gray, who only played a few years in the league after being a second-round pick in 1997 of the Minnesota Vikings.
