Industrial-grade Multirotors Earn Their Keep.
With all new technologies, there’s a regular evolution that leads from concept to prototype, then from beta test to product release. A lot of things have to go right at just the right time for something to truly become a worldwide success. To go to the next level, that product has to reach a tipping point where it proves itself more than just an enthusiast’s oddity and crosses over to become a viable and reliable standalone device. We are, of course, talking about the rotor drone and the amazingly fast development of a whole range of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multirotors. Paired up with GPS navigation and self stabilization flight controls, efficient motors, and long-lasting battery packs, who can argue that the top of the rotor-drone food chain isn’t a huge success? The future for drone developers and pilots is now ripe for even more expansion and development. After a speedy but relatively involved maturing, which quickly gained the attention of federal-government regulators, today’s marketplace specific to rotor-drone use is quite diverse. Here are just a few of the many new jobs that have been made possible or greatly enhanced by the use of multirotor drones.
INFRASTRUCTURE

Windracers Mail Delivery
With its partner Windracers Ltd., Royal Mail has become the first UK parcel carrier to deliver mail to a UK island in a 70-mile, beyond-line-of-sight, autonomous flight to the Scilly Isles. Tasked to better connect the islands’ remote communities, a consortium including Royal Mail, Windracers Ltd., DronePrep, University of Southampton, Excalibur Healthcare Services, and Consortiq Limited is funded by UK Research and Innovation.
Counting Penguins
Counting penguins is harder than it sounds. With freezing rain, snow, and chilling winds that limit the flight windows for the surveys, it takes scientists using three full days to map the location of 300,000 nesting pairs of Adélie penguins on Antarctica’s Cape Crozier.

UAS TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT The Key to the Future of Drones
In 2012, Congress passed the FAA Modernization and Reform Act, which established a deadline for the agency: achieve full integration of drones into the airspace by 2015. As the calendar rolls over into 2021, this begs an obvious question: “Are we there yet?”
