With Eli Manning taking every meaningful snap for the New York Giants since 2004, the team has been blessed to look at backup quarterback as an afterthought.
They do realize, however, that Manning will someday have to depart their backfield, and they believe they found the heir to their metropolitan empire with their final pick of the 2017 NFL Draft’s second day.
With their third pick of the annual selection proceedings, the Giants selected quarterback Davis Webb, formerly of elite programs Texas Tech and Cal-Berkeley, with the 87th overall selection.
“He’s a young guy. He needs to come in and see how he does. (We’ll) throw him into the mix and let him compete,” head coach Ben McAdoo said. “I think he’s a big man, he’s a fluid mover, he’s a pocket passer, but he’s not necessarily a statue back there. He can move around and has some good rhythm in the body.”
Webb is the first quarterback the Giants have selected since 2013, when they took the departed Ryan Nassib in the fourth round. He ends his college career with a whopping 9,852 yards during his time in Lubbock and Berkeley.
