Rubina P. Banerjee reviews the mantras that made for Hindi film music in 2015 and reviews the current trends as time moves on to sing on the notes of 2016!
The one mantra that works in India is music and we, diverse people, have this one common denominator that appeals to all. What’s more, we are lucky to have a plethora of amazing composers, soul-stirring singers and talented musicians who churn out music for every film, regaling us with a song for every season nay every month or week depending on releases. Rewinding to listen to the hits of 2015, I find that this year too has given us a delightful mix of some eminently hummable songs, scintillating dance numbers and beautiful ballads.
The rainbow hues of love pervade as the evergreen couple Shah Rukh and Kajol give voice to the colour of love ‘Gerua…’ and Pritam spins his magic in his inimitable style while the beautiful baritone of Arijit Singh and the mellifluous Antara Mitra make this DILWALE song ride the crest of the charts and our hearts.
And then there is Alka Yagnik’s melodious voice invoking the soul to rise with ‘Agar tum saath ho…’ (TAMASHA) and Rahman is back with his unique blend of pure melody and rhythm that touches the soul. True, the song is reminiscent of ‘O paalan hare…’, and ‘Luka chupi…’ but the master’s touch and his ability to make you see God through the strains of his song is what makes this song unique!
While Rahman and Pritam loom large on the charts of 2015, the well-loved voices of Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Mohit Chauhan and Alka Yagnik enthrall us. It has been a year of new composers and new voices that have rocked the charts!
Composers like Amaal Malik, Jeet Ganguly, Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari, Meet Brothers, Sachin Jigar who are now established have company as new composers like Tanishq and Vayu (TANU WEDS MANU RETURNS), Dr. Zeus (EK PAHELI LEELA), and Ajay Atul (BROTHERS) join in. And the stalwarts like Amit Trivedi, Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid are firmly entrenched.
