Mystery still shrouds the death of Santanu Bhowmik- a Tripura-based TV journalist- who was killed on September 21,2017, by miscreants, allegedly owing allegiance to the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). Meanwhile, serious allegations of incompetency are being raised against Tripura Police- both by local villagers and as well as by a larger section of the media fraternity. They strongly feel that a CBI probe into the incident is a necessity as the SIT investigation ordered by the state government is just an eyewash.
Furore that journalist Santa-nu Bhowmik’s death caused is yet to subside; allegations of incompetency are being raised against Tripura Police. While the Tripura police is trying to give an impression that 144 CrPC was promulgated in the area and that they were in the process of dispersing a crowd of the IPFT that had gathered there (on September 21) intending a road blockage in protest of their party flag being burnt the previous night, the fact that CPI (M) cadres gathered there from outside is been kept hidden.
Local villagers alleged that a fight broke out between IPFT and CPI (M) in front of the police, that did not do much to stop it. They said, if prompt action was taken police could have perhaps prevented the untoward incident. Large number of non-tribal under CPI (M) and GMP banner had gathered from a few km away Jirania and this added fuel to the fire but police for some reason is trying to conceal this.
Ranju Mia a villager whose house is adjacent to the murder spot said, “Someone committed the incident and we are the sufferers. Out of fear we do not sleep during the night. TSR (Tripura State Rifles) was there and everything took place in front of them. They neither use their batons or guns and so we had to run away from our houses. Our demand is security and peace.”
