Creating a special act for the CBI and putting law and order in the concurrent list may be the way forward
Let the truth prevail. I have full faith in the judiciary and the system,’’ Central Bureau of Investigation special di-rector Rakesh Asthana told THE WEEK. Asthana broke his silence for the first time since his fight with CBI director Alok Verma made headlines. The bitter war between the CBI’s two top bosses culminated with the government issuing externment orders on October 24, asking both Verma and Asthana to go on leave until the Central Vigilance Commission completed its probe.
An unprecedented situation has arisen. While Verma remains an occupant of 2, Janpath, the house allocated to the CBI director, he is no longer allowed to enter the CBI headquarters. Verma approached the Supreme Court challenging his externment. The apex court asked the CVC to complete its inquiry and submit its report by November 12. It also ruled that the government-appointed interim director M. Nageshwar Rao should not take any major policy decisions. Asthana’s plea seeking the quashing of the FIR against him is pending in the Delhi High Court. The FIR registered by the CBI had levelled bribery allegations against Asthana.
