Adam Collins in India and Geoff Lemon of the ABC Down Under.
The boys show their respect for a man who putaside his attacking instincts to mount a first innings rescue.
Geoff Lemon: Be still my heart. I don’t know what to say. And this is the worst time to be writing about it, when we’re in the middle of unfinished business. But here we are. Glenn ‘The Big Show’ Maxwell. Back in Test cricket. Making his highest score. Whether he comes back on Day Two to reach triple figures or not, he’s played a hell of a hand today. And wasn’t it satisfying to watch.
Adam Collins: How’s this: he faced 56 balls before hitting a boundary. Who knows how many times he has batted in his entire life, but I am willing to bet all of my money and all of yours that he’s never done that. The proverbial man on a mission. Coming in at such a clutch time, too. The case for his inclusion has always been about how he could destroy a side. But today it was destruction of an entirely different kind. A grinding, deliberate kind. And he’s still there. Couldn’t be happier for him.
GL: That’s exactly it. We haven’t had a side pass 300 yet in this series, and now Australia are poised to do so. If he and Sniffer Smith push on tomorrow, it might be a fair way bigger. This pitch didn’t have too many demons in it, and both batsmen summed up the conditions, showed patience, and played the appropriate hand for the conditions. I absolutely cannot believe I just said all that about an Australian batting order.
