Brackley won a bruising and tense game through Alex Gudger’s 85th-minute goal to leave the tie finely poised.

Gudger’s fine finish sets up an intriguing second leg at Grosvenor Vale next Saturday after this game was played out in freezing conditions.

“I am pleased with the result, but it would be nice to have a greater cushion,” was Brackley manager Kevin Wilkin’s verdict.

“The conditions today were incredibly tough. The way we went about our business was pleasing yet neither keeper had to make too many saves.

“We had a lot of possession, but we just didn’t break them down.”

Wealdstone manager Bobby Wilkinson was not too unhappy with the outcome.

“I am disappointed to concede the goal, but we are still in the tie,” he said.

“We knew we had to leave here still in it and we have 90 minutes now at home to turn it round.
