MIDFIELD ace John Rooney pressed his claims for a new Wrexham contract with the two goals that sealed victory at the Racecourse against relegation-threatened Guiseley.
Benched because another start for the Dragons would trigger a lucrative new deal, Rooney was introduced after an hour, scored his 10th goal of the campaign within two minutes and then clinched the points with a late trademark free-kick.
Keen to reach a compromise agreement with the club’s leading goal scorer, manager Dean Keates said: “We are not a million miles apart and I can understand where the lad is coming from. Hopefully we can find some middle ground and get something done.”
The Racecourse boss, whose side have now won four of their last five games, added: “It wasn’t a great performance, but the character of the team shone through after we went behind to an early goal.”
