Regent came with a game plan and carried it out assuredly, while the defeat continued the Rooks’ abject home form and left them just two points above yesterday’s winners.

A poor game was decided by a setpiece on the cusp of half-time, as Brightlingsea looped a corner to the far post and the tallest player on the pitch, centre-back Thompson, headed home.

It was one of the few efforts on goal in the entire game, with both sides struggling to cope with the Dripping Pan conditions.

The closest Lewes came to scoring was when a good ball spread wide to Dimitri Hatizmouratis was fed into Billy Medlock, but his shot was bravely blocked by right-back Pip Boyland.
