Campaign raises cash for submariners’ monument

Alone sailor stands in a conning tower in this design for a fitting memorial to Britain’s submariners.

The bronze monument will be created by British sculptor Paul Day, the man behind the Battle of Britain shrine on the Thames embankment in London.

The submariners’ memorial will be 11ft high and 13ft long.

A huge effort to raise the £375,000 needed to build it is now under way so it can be unveiled at the National Arboretum Remembrance site in Staffordshire by 2022.

Daily Express readers have helped raise funds after we covered the launch of the memorial campaign in October.

So far, just under £46,000 has been raised.

Paul said: “I imagine visitors walking through a somewhat confined space to suggest the constraints upon movement that dictate life on board a submarine.
