High Streets In Peril After 420,000 Jobs Lost

The GMB union said that its research pointed to a 28% decline in "traditional" shop jobs over the past decade.

Its report comes in the wake of the closure of all Wilko stores, leading to the loss of thousands of jobs.

GMB delegates to Labour's annual conference will warn today that more posts will disappear unless economic reforms are made.

The gathering is due to debate GMB calls for "archaic" business rates to be replaced, as well as the introduction of better protection for workers who are made redundant.
