One In Seven 'Addicted' To Ultra-Processed Food

Researchers found that around 14% of adults and 12% of children globally are addicted to ultra-processed foods.

Examples include breakfast cereal, mass-produced bread, ham, ice cream, sausages, bacon, crisps and biscuits.

The team, which included experts on food addiction, behavioural addiction and eating disorders, say it is time for a shift in the way we think about this food group.

Professor Ashley Gearhardt, of the University of Michigan, said: "By acknowledging that certain types of processed foods have the properties of addictive substances, we may be able to help improve global health."
