People flocked to beaches and beauty spots yesterday on the first weekend since lockdown was eased in England – as police carried out spot checks on drivers.

More than 15million day trippers were expected to hit the roads after the ban on people leaving their local area was lifted.

But many motorists were pulled over by officers carrying out road safety checks, and grilled about where they were going.

Police set up checkpoints and stopped cars from London heading to Brighton for the day.

Sussex Police said they had the power to pull over whoever they wanted. A spokesman said: “With an increase in vehicles on our county’s roads, it is paramount we ensure the safety of all road users, as well as remaining committed to preventing criminals having the use of our roads.”
