The world No1, who has won three Grand Slams and is the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open champion, revealed her decision in an emotional Instagram video recorded with her friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua.
The Australian has been top of the rankings since winning the French Open in 2019, but explained she was retiring to “chase other dreams”.
Barty took a break from tennis in 2014, citing its intense demands, and played in the inaugural season of cricket’s Women’s Big Bash. She returned to tennis but has now officially called it a day.
“I’m so happy and I’m so ready. I just know at the moment in my heart, for me as a person, this is right,” Barty said.
“I know that people may not understand it. I’m okay with that, because I know that Ash Barty the person has so many dreams she wants to chase that don’t necessarily involve travelling the world, being away from my family, my home, which is where I’ve always wanted to be.”
