As ministers came under growing pressure to match the US and EU by targeting more wealthy businessmen with links to the Kremlin, the US magazine Forbes reported that Mr Usmanov’s 512-foot yacht, Dilbar, had been taken in the port of Hamburg yesterday.
Mr Usmanov, who is worth about £13 billion according to the Sunday Times Rich List, was a major shareholder in Arsenal until 2018 and owns two properties in the UK, including a £48 million mansion in Highgate.
Everton Football Club yesterday suspended all sponsorship deals with Russian companies associated with Mr Usmanov, after he was included on a list of 26 individuals with links to the Russian government who will now face sanctions from Brussels.
