Tamil Nadu entered the 4th phase of COVID-19 lockdown on Monday, with 14 of the state’s 39 districts still remaining under curbs due to the raging pandemic which has already seen over 11,000 infections. Many northern districts, including Chennai, continue to face prohibitory orders.
The number of COVID-19 cases stood at 11,224 as of Monday morning, with Chennai alone accounting for 6,750 cases.
The state has seen 78 deaths in the pandemic. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday announced the extension till May 31. He said the move was in accordance with the recommendations of medical and public health experts.
The state-owned Metropolitan Transport Corporation on Monday operated 200 buses in Chennai to ferry employees to their offices.
The government will have a six-day working week, including Saturdays, with 50 per cent workforce to function in batches by following the alternate working system.
As per the government order, schools, colleges and other research institutions will remain closed until further orders.
