Given the geographical interpretations and nuances associated with the festival, Diwali week is a great time to jet off and observe how people celebrate it across the country. Data from Kayak, too, highlights that 72% of Gen X and 75% of baby boomers are choosing destinations with rich traditions and heritage. "There has been a notable surge in domestic air bookings for Diwali (an increase of 28% from last year)," says Gaurav Patwari, vice president, air category, Cleartrip. Here's how these places across the country celebrate the festival and what to look forward to if you're in town.

AYODHYA

In the holy city where Lord Rama was born and then returned to after his 14-year exile, Diwali is arguably one of the most exciting times. A prominent location that people flock to is the Ram ki Paidi, where on the banks of the river Sarayu, lakhs of diyas are lit along the riverfront on November 11. Last year, the lighting of over 15 lakh diyas got Ayodhya a place in the Guinness World Records. Visitors also queue up at Hanuman Garhi temple, Kanak Bhawan temple, Hanuman Garhi and Sita Ki Rasoi.
