Leader warns UK not to alter Brexit treaty

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen warned yesterday that the UK cannot unilaterally disregard the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

In her annual State of the Union address, she said both sides agreed it was the only way to guarantee the North’s peace process.

She added trust would be undermined if the UK started to go back on its international treaty obligations.

The warning came after Britain issued legislation enabling ministers to override provisions in the Withdrawal Agreement relating to the North.
